St. Euphemia’s Basilica: The Guardian of Rovinj

The Legend of St. Euphemia

According to legend, in the middle of one stormy weather in 800 AD, there appeared the remains of St. Euphemia in a marble sarcophagus, which miraculously washed ashore. The townspeople tried to move it and found it immovable until it was moved with two oxen by a small boy, which would have to be taken for a sign from heaven that the saint chose Rovinj for her resting place. The sarcophagus of St. Euphemia is preserved within the basilica, and she is still revered as its patron saint.
